Forrestal Nature Preserve Steering Committee
Public Comments on Proposed Trail Usage
June 14, 2004 Ladera Linda Community Center
● George Fink (Ladera Linda HOA
President) commented on results of survey of LL homeowners (FSC has received
the results); as member of LL Trail Use Committee approves of equestrian
access as defined on map; suggests no equestrian access to knoll on Fossil Hill
● Barbara Walch (RPV resident) Referenced
Portuguese Bend trail & personal
experiences; anticipates danger on multi-use trails from bicycles
● Bob Mucha (LL Trail Committee) Dismayed by lack of
trail standards; referenced
municipal codes that regulate street traffic; L5/L6 should be eliminated due to
their location in the street right-of-way
● Troy Braswell (CORBA PV) Pleased with usage map,
urge reconsideration of L8b for bicycles. Presented photos that displayed trail
width; opposed to trial period - discriminatory against bicycles
● Roger Mills (RPV resident) Against equestrian use
● Arthur Maier (RPV resident) Against equestrian
use; asked who will be responsible for cleaning up the manure?
● Greg Scarich (CORBA) Sees no conflict among users;
L8b is an easy trail and should be open to bicycles
● Bob Endicott (Hiker/Biker) Not satisfied with the
closure of L8b to bicycles
● Hersh Kelley (PV Sierra Club) Concerned with
habitat impacts of trail use
● David Sundstrom (CNPS) Read statement; concerned
with active recreation intensity; please reconsider trail uses to eliminate
bicycle use
● Donald Latterman (Neighbor) City has not thought
through multi-use; against equestrian and probably bicycle use
● Don Ershing (Neighbor) Against equestrian use
● Tom Hollingsworth (Neighbor) Wants continued use of
track around new soccer fields; approves of multi-use trails
● Deborah Powers (Educator/CORBA) Asks that
committee and public be receptive to multi-use and to allow L8b for bicycles
● Jill Carlton (Neighbor) Trails should be open to
all uses, has seen no conflicts
● Dale Allen (PVPHA) Concerned about elimination of
trails that were established and used by horses for years; welcomes other users;
Eliminating L5, 6, 7 denies equestrian rights
● Dennis Kokas (CORBA) Safer to ride a bicycle than
to hike; narrow trails may be safer; consider one way traffic on trails;
multi-use the best plan
● Kay Bara (RPV Resident) Equestrians need L7 at
least temporarily for the Eastside residents who are landlocked; historic
multi-use of Forrestal
● Jessica Vlaco (Neighbor) Against equestrian use;
worried about trailers, manure, widening trails
● Clarification of trail connections - Mihranian
● Paul Tetrault (Neighbor, Past President LLHOA)
Likes the idea of multi-use; Must preserve habitat, closing trails will
accomplish this; look into undedicating roads to prohibit equestrian use; found
FSC to be very responsive, open to public comments
● Sue Castillo (Hiker) Against bicycles: they
disrupt experience, destroy habitat
● Martin Byhower (Educator/PV Audubon Society)
Against bicycles in nature preserve
● Joan Kelly (RPV resident) Difficult for people to
see the bigger picture; approves of six month review period
● Richard Bara (RPV resident) Request LL homeowners
to support future Port Bend equestrian center; laments loss of L9,6,7 as
equestrian use trails
● Matt Humphrey (Neighbor) Appreciates trails;
supports multi-use
● Steve Greenfield (Neighbor) AYSO will have impacts
● Sunshine (RPV resident) Referenced position
statement (committee has copies);
current proposal diminishes equestrian use; habitat has survived many years of
multi-use
